The Crowds Are Strong With This Park

Today was the first day of the final Star Wars weekends at Hollywood Studios, so obviously we had to go.  This week they had Peter Mayhew and Billy Dee Williams making appearances.  This explains why there were people camping out at the gate the night before.  To get an autograph you had to get a fast pass, and by the time Tori and I got to the gate a few minutes after open, they were already all gone.  Crazy!  That's ok we got to see them in the parade, though I have to say Billy Dee looked really less than badass with his giant hat and cane (watch out for grandpa Calrissian, you stay off his clouds).

The park was extremely crowded, especially the Star Wars area of the park, which really only has one ride, and a gift shop (though the expanded "Darth mall" was pretty busy too.  We did get to ride Star Tours early in the morning during one of the autograph sessions, but after that the wait ticked up to over an hour, which is insane!  There were also a number of characters around the park to get pictures with, but the lines were long and we always seemed to happen upon them when they were going on break.  Jasmine did get a hug from Chewbacca when he headed off to break, but other than that the only character interaction we got was when Tori got a picture with a guy from the Cantina band as they were out on the street.

After hitting all the major attractions we then decided to shoot over to Epcot to get some lunch.  The day before we decided it would be fun to head to Morocco and get some Shawarma, and it turns out that was a good decision.  It was good and different from anything else we had for meals so far.  We also had some time for the girls to see some characters.  When we finished that up we headed back to see the Indiana Jones stunt show.  It was interesting because they made a few changes to it, though nothing major, but it was still neat to see that it was different.  Somehow despite getting there close to show time we still ended up in the third row center, which was awesome. 

After that it was close to closing time so we did a quick run through a gift shop and then Tori and I headed to the main stage to watch the final Star Wars event the Hypersapce Hoopla.  Pretty much it's a show from the hosts of the Star Wars Weekend, where all the characters come out and they have a dance off/dance party.  I'm really glad we stayed for that because it was pretty freaking fun.  Jasmine wasn't interested so she ran to the Darth Mall to pick something up for Tori, and Becky headed to the memorabilia store to look around and met us after the show was over.  If you're bored or like Star Wars here's the video.  It's kind of campy and silly, but I had a ton of fun.

After we finished at the park we headed to Downtown for dinner at the Earl of Sandwich (SO GOOD!) and then shop around downtown.  They had some great new Lego things like The Hulk, and then the good old ones like the Prince fighting with the Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty.  They also had a really neat painting at the Art of Disney store of Peter Pan and the characters from Neverland in the clouds.  It was pretty cool.  So, all together today was really nice, and it didn't even rain! WOO!  Star Wars weekend was super fun, I wish we had more time and it wasn't quite as busy so we could have hit some of the other presentations, but perhaps sometime in the future we can make it back.

Han in carbonite greets you as you enter the Darth Mall.  Cute play on words there... harhar.  Pretty much it was a giant tent that was filled with tons of stuff to buy.  My favorite was a picture of Admiral Ackbar dressed in 19th century naval uniform and a huge mustache.  If only I had the money for that one!

"What do you want, you horrid bitch?"

Well apparently today we got to deal with Tropical Storm Andrea.  The guy at the gate of Epcot said we should expect eight inches of rain, and I think we probably got about that much.  The wind was also awesome too, especially when you are walking around in a garbage bag with holes in it and a picture of Mickey on the back of it.  They really need better closes on those things because the wind was happy to open up the holes between the snaps and then shove rain water into your poncho.  My feet were totally soaked within about two minutes of being in the park.

Needless to say when there is a tropical storm all up in your business it's hard to get a lot of pictures, and really you don't want to be outside much.  We headed straight to Soarin' to get fast pass (which was good because the standby line was 120 minutes.  With our fast pass in hand we headed over to Mission Space to take our trip to Mars.  It's a fun ride, and the line was only about 15 minutes which was nice.  We wanted to ride Test Track, but with the rain it just wasn't going to happen, so hopefully we'll be able to give it a try tomorrow or something.

We then headed around the world.  The other disappointing thing about a tropical storm is that there aren't any street performers out doing their cool little shows, so mostly we just went in the shops and looked around.  Tori and Jasmine had a nice time with the troll.  In Germany we stopped and got some caramel covered cookies, which were delicious.  I wanted to see the drum show and the candy lady in Japan, but the weather didn't work for that.  We can try to see the drums later, but the candy lady doesn't work on Fridays or Saturdays.  Sad.  In Morocco we decided that we'd have to come back tomorrow for shawarma, and then headed to France for a delicious dinner. The Lobster Bisque was wonderful, and I think everyone was quite pleased with their meals.

Feeling exhausted we headed back to the hotel early to relax a bit.  We watched Indiana Jones since Jasmine hadn't seen it and Tori saw it so long ago she didn't remember it.  It was fun, we snacked a bit, and then when it was over we decided since it finally stopped raining to try and go to Hollywood Studios to see Fantasmic.  This turned out to be a great plan because there weren't many people in the park and we got to ride the Tower of Terror at night, while waiting for the line to queue up for the show.  We even got really good seats because it was the second showing.  So all in all despite that horrid bitch, Andrea, we had a good day in Disney.

The Hollywood Tower of Terror all lit up on the Palm lined streets.  It wa sa lot of fun to ride it at night because you couldn't really see when you made it to the outside part where you drop.  You could kind of tell when the car was in place, but only if you rode the ride in the past.  It was great to come back at night, and that the park was open till 10 which is later than all the other parks.

This is in the Mexico portion of Epcot and is just a bar that sells tequila.  The menu is literally a page long, and they have one that's $45 (they sell individual drinks, so that isn't the price for a bottle).

You Sneaky Bitches

So far we're getting the mileage out of those ponchos because again today we got rain like a monsoon.  Luckily it didn't last long but it was a hard rain and a ton of it too.  Really, it was like the scene from Forest Gump where they're walking along and one day it just started raining 

We started our day at Animal Kingdom and though we ended up being a little later than expected due to the slow bus route, we still go there pretty early and were able to take care of the major rides we wanted to hit.  It was actually surprisingly empty today, I'm not sure why because the weather wasn't terrible until the afternoon when the monsoon started, but I'm not going to complain becuase we were able to get to do just about everything we wanted, though we missed some pictures with Doug from UP.

Our first stop was at Expedition Everest, which is one of my favorite rides in the Disney parks.  The theme for this one is you're headed up the mountain but you're stopped by a pesky yeti intend on screwing things up.  I guess people must have been afraid of the Yeti robot at the end because instead of the light on it so you can see it roar and be angry they went with a strobe effect.  It was fun to ride this one with newbies because they didn't know what was coming or what to expect, so they were fun to watch and see their reactions.

After that we hit the safari ride, which was actually pretty good this time.  It was cloudy and not too hot so there were a lot of animals out.  We didn't get as close to the giraffes as we have in the past, they were all eating quite a distance from the trail, but we got up right next to a Rhino which I've never seen before.  Usually they're off hiding behind bushes or something.  We also got to see the Cheetahs.  They weren't moving around but they also weren't hiding in the back taking a nap, so BONUS!

After that we hit a bunch of the shows.  We got to see Nemo The Musical, which succeeded in getting the big blue world song stuck in our heads (this isn't a good thing), we also got to see the bird show, which was really neat and a big hawk almost took off my head.  We ended our day at the Animal Kingdom seeing the Lion King show, which is a lot of fun. It wasn't too bad, we got out of there by about 3:00 and got to most of the major attractions.  We missed a few things here or there, but nothing major.  I think the wet feet from the rain pushed everyone to want to get out and change.

After drying off we decided to go to Downtown Disney and get some dinner at Planet Hollywood.  The place is filled with pieces from movies, so there's a lot to look at while you wait for your table.  Lucky for us we only had to wait about 15 minutes.  Everyone seemed to enjoy dinner, though my Tuscan chicken sandwich I found to be only "meh".  Last time my dinner was also "meh" when we ate there, but Becky loves the garlic noodle dish, and it is a fun place to go.  So perhaps one day I'll find something to eat there.

After dinner we took a nice walk down the West Side and stopped in some shops.  We then walked up and went through the Cirque Du Soleil gift shop.  Tori said if she had hundreds of dollars we were going to see that tonight.  What's funny is that I got us tickets and picked them up while they were looking in the shop next door.  Right after we all got pictures in front of the sign I pulled them out and gave them to everyone and watched the excited meltdown.  Really it was almost as good as the show.  Not really because the show was freaking awesome.  Becky and I saw it once a number of years ago, so it was fun to see it again.  Our seats were really good, especially considering they were middle priced seats, and a number of pricing levels below the primo seats.  The clowns did most of their routine right in front of us, which was a lot of fun.  My favorite was when they tried to help someone to their seats only to take their tickets and put them right up on stage.  The guy didn't seem to know what to do because then the clowns sped off and didn't give them their tickets back. 

It was a wonderful evening and everyone had so much fun.  Tomorrow we're off to Epcot to get all the things we missed the first day.

And On The First Day, Disney Created Ponchos

Today we headed to Orlando and the last leg of our trip with our five day trip to Disney World.  We headed into the resort and checked in to find that they were almost ready with our room and that they were happy to give us a complimentary upgrade to a one bedroom villa instead of the studio that I reserved.  This is actually the second time that happened to us when staying in a vacation club resort.  I'm not going to complain because the room is amazing.  There's a full kitchen, a divided bathroom so you've got one side with a tub and the other with a shower, and of course a living room with a DVD player which has been great for watching movies.

When we first arrived they told us it would be a few minutes so they took my number and said I would get a text when our room was done so we headed out to Epcot.  I didn't know it was such a short walk to Epcot, and that it let you in at the very back of the park which avoids a lot of the lines.  It was mostly sunny and hot which wasn't the greatest for the sunburn.  Our first stop was the World Showcase and we walked around England and Canada.  We got to see some of the British tribute rock band.

After our exploration of the Canada and the UK we headed to Ohana to try and get a table for dinner.  It's really hard to get a reservation and you really have to reserve about six months out in order to be sure to get a table.  So, we arrived right when they opened and stood in the standby line.  Apparently even the standby line doesn't guarantee that you're going to get a table, and for a few minutes it sounded like we were going to be totally out of luck because they took a bunch of groups back and not us, but then the host came back and we managed to get a table with only a 30 minute wait.  Of course the food was fantastic and we had a great time.  I was kind of surprised we didn't eat more, but everyone was super full and happy.  I was also surprised at the way the girls descended on the bread pudding.  They were like vultures or those scarabs that eat people on The Mummy.  Whatever they were like the thing was destroyed.

After dinner we headed back to Epcot to hit some more attractions and see the fireworks show.  We headed over to the Finding Nemo and Living Seas attraction.  We got to see the dolphins, which was nice, and the Manatees were sleeping again.  We also got to see a Sea Turtle up close, so close in fact we were right there when it took a giant turtle crap right in front of the window.  Overall it was a great evening and we managed to do quit a bit given that we didn't have that much time.

That all changed when we went to leave the Living Seas to find the skies opened up and dumped what scientists called a "shit-ton" of rain.  We tried to wait as long as we could but eventually it just started getting worse and worse so I just bought us all ponchos and we started heading off to the resort.  When we were back to the World Showcase we realized it was only 10 minutes before the firework show, that the firework show was still going on, and that EVERYONE had left so there was excellent viewing locations so we stuck around and watched the show.  Actually I think that was the best view we ever had of the show.  We were right in the front in Canada, no trees, no crowds in front of us, but instead just a clear view of the show.

So, while we had a lot of rain, we still got a lot of done and overall it was a good opening day at Disney.

Wrath Of The Sun

Well, turns out the sun did a number on all of us now.  I did in fact get burned pretty badly yesterday.  The recommended times on the bottle are clearly insufficient.  Everyone has some burn somewhere, I have it worst on my shoulders and neck, so does Becky.  Tori got out the least burnt and she was all gloats about that last night but after a day at the beach she got it too.  We spent a ton of time in the pool after dinner to try and sooth it a bit.  I hope it helps, but I guess we'll find out tomorrow.  The beach was lovely again today, and we spent a long time at the beach today and even though the weather said rain today, it was just some big puffy clouds and didn't rain a drop all day.

After spending another exhausting day swimming we decided to try the character buffet dinner.  The lady on the reservation line was like "a character dinner with teenagers?!" And we were all, "Yeah, that's right, wanna fight about it?"  It was actually a wonderful time.  It was a family style buffet which was a lot of fun because we don't have to go get it, they just keep bringing stuff to you from the kitchen.  They had a wide selection of meats as well as a ton of sides.  It was clearly geared towards kids because there was corn on the cob, mac and cheese, and other kid friendly items.  The event was also pirate themed so when you got to your table you had a bandana and an eye patch to wear.  After you've been there a few minutes Donald and Goofy both dressed as pirates come around to your table to say hello, give autographs and just general tomfoolery.  Goofy tried to sit at the table behind us and order some food, but they didn't give him any.  Donald came around a few times to mess with Jasmine.  It was a lot of fun.

After dinner we walked the resort to see what it looked like and then headed down to the camp fire to see what was up with it.  Turns out what was up was that it was packed full with no room to sit, and the bugs were feasting.  We stayed for maybe three or four minutes until all of us were sick of the bugs and decided to move on.  it was strange because that was the only place that the bugs were a problem.  The rest of the resort was pretty much bug free (or at least the bugs that eat you.)  So instead of the bonfire we took a walk down the beach to see if we could find some more interesting shells.  There had to be some out there because the people with the room under ours had a ton of awesome shells on their balcony.  By this point it had gotten very cloudy and looked like rain, but only a sprinkle or two which may have been spray from the ocean.

As we were walking on the beach we met a marine biologist.  The beach has a number of sea turtle egg nests and she informed us that there was a turtle right off shore trying to come in.  Apparently they're super shy so the fact that she was seen during the day meant that she was REALLY wanting to get to shore.  The biologist said that the turtle wouldn't come to shore until it was dark, and if we got up really early we'd probably be able to see the tracks she made up and back to shore.  You can't see it too well, but there's a black blob in the sea, which is the turtle!  It was the coolest ever. 

So that's it from the ocean!  It's been a relaxing and amazing time.  Tomorrow we head to Disney World.

A lot of people carved their names into the edge of the beach.  It was a sand and shell mixture so it was really hard and you had to use a shell to carve into it.  I don't know how long it'll last but for now there are all our initials! 

Change of Plans

We planned on being at the ocean today, and enjoy some relaxing time at the beach, and while we still decided to do that, we had some major plan changes.  As I mentioned yesterday I really wasn't happy with our hotel, and when I woke up this morning the situation was not better and it wasn't just that I was tired and cranky.  Our ocean view room is more of a tree view room since there is so much green in the yard opposite of the patio that you can only sort of see the ocean.  Also, with being on the first floor there's no way you could just leave the door open and listen to the ocean all night like we hoped to do, and when we got up to shower it turns out the tub doesn't drain at all.  This added on to the stained everything from last night, and the fact that we woke up with beer cans on our patio and a giant cigar butt, just left me not feeling happy about our situation.

Well, sometimes situations that start off less than stellar turn out to be wonderful.  As I was checking my Facebook I got a message with some suggestions about dinner.  Among those suggestions was also a comment that if we wanted we could also drive down to Vero Beach and eat at the Disney Resort there.  I had completely forgotten that there were Disney beach resorts!  So, I hopped online and did some research to see what the resort looked like and Becky went to the front desk to see if it would be possible to check out early without having to pay for the extra nights we'd already checked in for.  Turns out the price was fine and the current hotel let us check out early!  So we did a super fast back, all piled into the car and drove the 40 minutes south to Disney's Vero Beach resort!

Pretty much what I've decided is that we're never staying anywhere else ever.  We arrived right around noon and they had our room ready to go, so we went straight up and unloaded all our bags.  The hotel had larger beds, nicer beds, a huge balcony that looked over the pool area as well as the ocean in the background.  In addition everything was clean, beautiful, and what exactly what I wanted our last hotel to be.  I'm actually really glad our last hotel was such a disappointment because this resort is amazing!  We also got a list of events that the hotel was doing.  Some were silly little things like every day in the afternoon they have a water slide race where everyone who wants to participate lines up and they clock how long it takes you to get to the bottom (apparently the all time record is 6.something seconds).  They also have a Bon Fire tomorrow night with s'mores and such.  The pool is also beautiful, with a pool table under the gazebo, a mini golf course around the edge, and then a ping pong table and shuffle board as well as a croquet lawn.  A few of these cost money (it's like $2 to play mini golf) but then a lot is free you just have to go check out the equipment. 

Today, however, was designated for the beach, so after getting situated we headed down to see how the ocean was.  As you go down past the pool there's direct beach access from a nice large deck, the little shop where you can rent water equipment or lounge chairs said that the water was 75 and the waves were about 1 to 3 feet.  Doesn't sound too bad.  Being that the resort is in the middle of nowhere the beach was not very crowded at all so we just walked a little bit down to an area that wasn't taken yet and set up then headed down to the water.  At first when the water touches your feet it feels pretty cold, but by the second or third wave it felt really warm.  In fact that water was delightful and once we were in it a while the cool currents felt even better because I think it may have been slightly too warm! 

We went out to about chest or neck deep and bounced in the waves as they came in.  It was a ton of fun. Every once in a while we'd end up in a sea weed patch that was being washed in so that was a little gross but if you'd swim a few feet you could get out of it.  After swimming for the recommended time (less actually) we got out to reapply our sunblock and then headed right back in.  Well, I guess I didn't apply well enough because I'm feeling a burn coming on.  I don't look too red yet, but I can feel my shoulders becoming a bit uncomfortable and so I put some aloe on straight away.  Hopefully it won't be too bad. 

For dinner we decided to hit the restaurant here in the hotel, I had the rotisserie chicken over mashed potatoes but instead of the spinach I asked them to substitute for the roasted seasoned mushrooms and it was the best decision ever because they were delicious!  After dinner we sat around and watched some Disney movies.  Since we're headed to Magic Kingdom we watched The Swiss Family Robinson so we can go see the tree house when we're in the park.  After that we watched Aladdin.  We also took a few minutes to notice how bright the stars were and it has made me really excited for our weekend trip to the dark sky park! 

Well that's it from day two of our trip.  I feel like we've already been gone a week, and I can't believe it's only been two days.

Leaving On A Jet Plane

Greetings from mostly sunny Florida!  To be more specific Orlando (Oooooorlaaaaandooooo! [if you have seen or heard the soundtrack to Book of Mormon then you totally know what I just did there]) Early this morning we got on a plane and headed down to Florida for our vacation for the year!  Can you hear the excitement?  Well it has been a totally exciting day and now that we're at the end of our day I can't believe that we've only been away from home for about 12 hours!  We've done so much and yet it's been totally relaxing.

Our day started bright and early leaving at friggin' 5:30 in the morning.  Often when I fly I end up leaving quite early in the morning, but the airport was really empty compared to other flights I've taken. In fact we checked our bags, made it through security and got some breakfast from McDonalds/Starbucks within an hour of leaving the house.  We even took a few minutes to stop and enjoy the fountain that is in the Delta terminal.

I actually really like flying out of Detroit because the Delta terminal is really nice.  It's very open, it doesn't stress me out like other airports do.  Perhaps some of that is because we always fly Delta, and we always fly out of Detroit so I've been to it a number of times and therefore I'm familiar with it.  Or, it's just a really nice terminal.

We had a little extra excitement for our flight because this was the first time Jasmine has ever flown, and Tori also has only flown once so they were pretty excited.  This is added to the excitement they already had for going to Florida, seeing the ocean, going to Disney World, and going to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.  When we got to the airport our plane was already at the gate so we got to watch them load it up with our snacks.  Things were going along quite well but then we got word that our flight had been delayed due to mechanical issues.  We watched them messing around in the nose cone for a bit, and then they managed to begin boarding about five minutes late and we pushed away from the gate right on time.  The flight was very smooth, nice and short, and the pilot had a wonderful landing so all in all this was a great flight.  In addition we even managed to deplane and be on our way five minutes early.

Since we got to Orlando by 10:00am, and our first part of the trip included some time at the beach we decided to make our first stop Universal Studios Islands of Adventure.  Now, I have to say that I have been to Universal twice and I'm really not impressed.  In fact, last year we went and I was actually really disappointed in not only Universal, which I find to be not a value at all and the rides hardly thrilling, but also in the Harry Potter portion of the park.  Last time it was super busy, there wasn't enough room, and the lines were just a nightmare.  I have to say this time I had a far more enjoyable experience.  The crowds weren't nearly as bad, so you didn't have to stand in line just to get into the shops.  It didn't take long to get into the attractions and all together it was absolutely fantastic.  It really is the closest thing you can get to being in the books.  It's really just wonderful to walk around and hear the music playing, walk through the shops, pick up some candy at Honeydukes, or some neat things at Zonkos.

We decided that this time we were going to get some food in the Potter section of the park and went into The Three Broomsticks to see what they had to eat.  Oh. My.  Why did we not come here last year?!  I think we may have been thrown off by the "specials" menu because it only listed some less than desirable items for lunch, but once you get inside the menu is much bigger.  I ended up with the Fish and Chips, there was also a lot of roasted chicken, and everyone added some Butterbeer to their meal.  As park food goes it was super delicious, and the prices weren't completely outrageous.  I mean all park food is overpriced, but in the range of "wow that seems a bit expensive" to "Ouch! Something just screwed me in the ass" this was "hmm, that could have been worse."  I think part of the charm of it too was being able to sit and be immersed in the world.  The staff helped direct you to tables so you really didn't have to worry about finding a place to sit, and you could just take your food, have a seat and enjoy it.

Once we made it through all the Harry Potter sections of the park we did the rest of the circuit and then headed back to Hogsmeade to pick up some souvenirs and try the frozen Butterbeer.  Becky thinks that is the superior format for Butterbeer, but I have to say I think it just gets the bump because it's like a  Slurpee.  For flavor and experience I think I like the traditional Butterbeer better.  We then packed up our stuff and headed out since we were all pretty tired.  It wasn't too terribly late yet, but just in time for dinner so we had to head up to the Cheesecake Factory for dinner, which was delightful!  Of course we haven't ever really had a bad experience here but it was extra good since we were pretty tired, and all in need of some water.  We ended up being so full that we had to take our cheesecake to go, and headed out to our hotel in Melbourne right on the ocean.

I will say that this ended up being the disappointment of the day.  It's about an hour drive to Melbourne from Orlando, and we had to drive through the rains of death to get there. I 'm talking rain so hard that even on the highest settings the washers just can't keep up.  I was actually shocked at how long this went on for because generally it seems that intensity like that just can't last, but this went on for probably a good half an hour, and we were driving into it, so really it should have passed over far quicker but it didn't.  We made it safely and checked into our hotel, but the entire night I just haven't been happy with the room location, the quality of the hotel or just anything.  We've stayed here before and it's been renovated, but this just isn't what I wanted.  We're on the first floor and our room is really dark, narrow and damp.  They have a dehumidifier but it was full when we got in and who knows how long it's been that way.  The room was also right next to the elevator so that is making a ton of noise, and there are a lot of stains on things like the bed skirt, the sheets on one bed, etc.  It's just kind of gross.  I checked with the desk to see if we could move, but they said they didn't have any other rooms available.  I plan on checking again in the morning, but I'm just really disappointed.  The up side is that the ocean is here, we got to go down to the beach for a few minutes and stick our toes in, though I'm also worried because the water seems far more rough than usual and I'm not sure how well it will work to go swimming in it.  I don't know, I guess we'll see how it is in the morning.  Good night all! It's only been one day but feels like we've been here for ages!

Because there are so many pictures in the next few blogs, I may try to only pick one or two for the featured picture of the day.  Really it'll probably just be a picture that I couldn't really fit into the blog itself.  So, we'll see how this goes over the course of the vacation.
