Alright, I'm going to assume that I've used up enough space that someone won't just accidentally see what I have to say about How I Met Your Mother's final episode. What it really should have been called was How I Disappointed Our Viewers... How I Ruined Your Ending... How I Was A Major Disappointment...
Here's the thing, they were building up to the mother being dead for quit some time. They had left enough clues that it was clear by the time Ted was telling this story she was dead and gone and that was sad enough. To have Ted finally meet his perfect match, the person he was looking for, to have it very clear that they were fated to meet and then to have her die is probably the worst possible ending you could come up with. Or that is what I thought going into this episode.
The problem isn't that they killed her though. That wasn't really a big deal. It was tragic, it was sad, it was not the ending I wanted from a show called "How I Met Your Mother", I could have lived with that ending, if they had just stopped it there. But they didn't stop it there, they went forward and decided that this entire story wasn't really about how he met their mother, it was about Robin. It was about how he met Robin, and how it never worked, and the timing was off, and how in the end the timing was finally right and he wanted to see how they'd feel about him dating her now that their mother was gone (a respectable six years later).
That make the whole perfect match with The Mom kind of cheap. Like it was just filler for them to get to the point that he could be with Robin, despite the fact that they never worked. I also am not pleased that the entire last season was a build up to ROBIN and BARNEY'S wedding only to find out that after a couple of years they just split and Barney reverted back to the kind of sleezy womanizing Barney. It just doesn't feel right, it doesn't seem like that's what the characters would have done. They had grown into better people, to have them revert back to pretty much the beginning of the show seems lame and poor story telling.
And if they want to claim this is always the plan, well it was a stupid plan. Perhaps the plan laid out nine years ago isn't the plan that they should have continued with. Things change and evolve, so sticking to some plan that really doesn't seem to fit anymore is stupid. Further if the claim is the show was about growing up and moving on past obstacles in the road, I don't feel it did that either. Ted finally realized that Robin wasn't the one for him, he moved on, he found the right match. To have him backslide to Robin is just poop.
I'm not happy with this ending at all. I think this may go down as the worst ending of a television show that I have seen. Zero starts. No thumbs up... in fact so terrible we've surgically altered every thumb in the world to point down for now until forever on account of how terrible this was.

I think after this winter, this screen shot of my weather app requires no caption.
