August Upon Us

I can't believe that tomorrow is August 1st! It seems like time is flying faster by the day! I briefly have discussed that a show is in the works, and it is! We open on the 11th, and have been waiting on some confirmation before we really start advertising it. Looks like we're in the park, and it should be good!

As soon as we have some publicity stuff, I'll post it! But, you should all come and see it!

What Weekend?

Rehearsal this morning, and then a bunch of stuff to do this afternoon. Where the heck did the weekend go? I'm out of time already, and it's only Saturday afternoon!

Last Call For Noah's Ark

Ok, that's an overstatement. But, apparently the other night the sump pump stopped working. I"m not sure why, because when I went down there and tried to "fix it" it just started working for no reason. So, the basement is very damp. The carpet is soaked, and the sump pump is now working. There wasn't really like any standing water, but everything was wet.

Irritating.

In other news we went dow to the Detroit Opera House to see some students in a show. It wasn't bad, and had a pretty good turn out. Good times for the evening.

Now, I'm watching Frasier on Halmark. I forgot how much this show made me laugh, but they silence out any "bad word" because you know, all those kids up at 11:20 at night.

Anyhow, that's about it.

Stepford Rant Revisited

I've decided that I've become more pissed off by the whole thing yesterday. I've had more time to process and replay events.

First, the cast was inside by probably 8:45. We were being attacked by bugs, and couldn't take it anymore. Second, the scenes we were at would not have been all that loud, so I'm not sure how disruptive we really could have been. Third, I'm irritated still by the "well, that's just not allowed in this kind of neighborhood." That was coming off.

I should have known when everyone was all "we're so happy to see you're participating" on our first Halloween. But apparently this is the kind of neighborhood where people stay inside, never go outside, with the exception to mow their lawn, or work on their landscaping. They have huge decks, but are never on them. They have large yards, but are never in them. They're only there to be green and so the realtor can say, "oh, and this one has a large back yard!"

I'm just annoyed. I don't like your tone, sir.

Hey Stepford

How about you all quit your bitching. Because we really aren't that loud. I'm sorry you don't like it when a dog barks DURING THE DAY! I'm sorry you don't like my dog SNIFFING YOUR TREE! And I'm sorry there were people in MY YARD at 8:30 in the evening. Ok, I get that you have kids that apparently have to go to bed at 8:00 during the summer. And I'm sorry they had a hard time going to sleep because we were IN MY YARD. But, you know what, maybe if they didn't go to bed at 8:00, they would ACTUALLY be tired rather than NOT, and COULD go to sleep.

I'm not irritated by that, because, no problem, I get that your kid's window is RIGHT THERE, but I don't like your tone, and I don't like that attitude of the asshats in this neighborhood, who are very "Stepford". We were practicing a play, not blaring music, and being drunken assholes. And, maybe if your reclusive, freak of a wife had a problem, she should have come out at the time and said, would you mind, I've got kids, rather than send you over the NEXT DAY during rehearsals to as "how much longer this is going to go on, because once in a while is fine, but every day...". FUCK OFF, I'll do what I want on my own property, and I'll be considerate, if you aren't an ass.

If you are, then I'm not going to feel so sympathetic.

Old Pleasure

Working in an office has given me back the one thing I did miss about that. Using my iPod. I've just caught up on 12 back episodes of Pottercast.

We also did it for CHEAP! Comes out to less than $30 per actor for an entire costume. NICE!

Last Day

Today is my last day of not working on a work day. At least for a while. Yes, that's right I have a temp job. It's ok I suppose. I'm an admin again, which I really don't want to do, but it's temporary and the organization seems somewhat interesting. There is 0% chance of any sort of mobility or "growth" being an admin, and in this organization I can't "move" to another position that would get me that, that is unless I want to become a Nuclear Scientist. Seriously, that's not a joke as I'm working for an energy institute that deals with nuclear energy, or at least that was what it was formed to do. I don't know if that's all that they do now. I suppose I could Google that...

Turns out, now they're all about sustainable energy. Cool.

Well now that we have solved that little mystery, I'm off to scan more photos.

The Muppet Show Tonight

Well, I've briefly mentioned that I'm working on a show. We still don't have a location, so we're trying to figure out what to do. We could perform in a park. I considered just airing it on YouTube and use it as a marketing piece for the group. I don't know, could do anything with it I suppose.

On another note, I had a great time tonight at rehearsal. They seem to be going really well. We have very limited rehearsal time, so I don't know how the end product will turn out, but the process has been fantastic so far!

Stupid Internet

You know what I hate? I hate whenever you try to register for something, or post a comment on something, or just do SOMETHING online, and you have to "type in the word shown" before you can. So, you're there at Ticketmaster trying to find tickets quickly to some hot show that's coming up and you want something before they're all gone; or, you're trying to post a comment on a friend's blog, or webpage or something; or you're just trying to register some internet service. You're online doing whatever, and you get that "enter the word shown" so you have to type it in before you can go forward.

THEN YOU HAVE TO DO IT 15 TIMES BECAUSE YOU CAN'T READ THE FRIGGIN' THING! Seriously!

If you want me to type in a word, perhaps you should make it legible, because half the time it's too distorted and you're not sure exactly what it's supposed to say.

That just really ticks me off.

So, That Happened.

First news of the day, I received an offer for a temp job. I'd be an admin. The position is temporary, but may become permanent but that's all hard to say at this point as the person I'd be admin-ing for may be leaving for a different organization. I start on Monday.

Finished The Catcher in the Rye today. Didn't watch the videos I posted yesterday until after I had finished reading it. There were some good points in it that I didn't think about as I was reading, because I was just reading to read. But it was remarkably sad how lonely he was, and that he never had anyone to call. Though most of the time I thought he was just being a stupid ass, and that's the only reason he didn't call anyone. I mean, it seemed to me the only thing getting in his way of having connections, doing things, being friendly, or having a good time was himself. He was a whiner, and nothing else. Everything had something wrong with it. He's the kind of person who would find a reason to complain if he won $300 million. It reminded me a bit of those people who hate things just because they're popular, or those who are negative just to be contrary. Perhaps if he'd actually picked up the phone, wasn't such an ass, or got over himself he wouldn't have had such a tough time.

I mean, I kind of felt sorry for him, but only to a point. Most the time he was just complaining about stupid stuff and needed to just get over himself. I also felt like he seemed like he was still messed up from his brother. He also seemed to be talking to the wrong people, rather than choosing the right people. He talked a lot about his brother, but never considered calling him up.

Also, never trust a hooker. They'll take your five dollars.

Oh, and, WOAH! Creeper-teacher! He was all, "ILIKETAHWATCHYOUSLEEP, BOOOay!"

As I don't have a ton to do, and as I mentioned I'm scanning in old film negatives so I have digital copies, I thought I'd post a picture or two. Right now I'm doing my earliest film, so they're all pictures from Virginia. Fond memories. Though, I've found that some of these pictures I have no idea what was going on when I took them, when they were or really even being there to take them. But, I have a picture, so obviously I was there.

The Catcher in the Rye

Yesterday I decided to read The Great Gatsby, on account of the videos that will be posted about it, and I wanted to follow along. Today I decided that while I was waiting for the scanner to do it's thing, I would read. See, each negative I scan takes about 5 minutes, so I have a lot of time to kill.

I went down to the GIANT bookcase to find a book to read. I was thinking of reading The Hunger Games as many people have suggested it (Becky, Kara, Kacey, etc.) but I remembered that Kara actually has them right now. So I was without a book to read. Then I remembered that Becky told me I should read The Catcher in the Rye. For some reason everyone at school read it, but I never did. So for a moment I felt a bit like Jerry Fletcher from Conspiracy Theory when he was talking about how he never read it in school, and how he needs to buy it when he sees it. I mean, I don't buy it when I see it, nor do I feel left out, but for a moment I was reminded of that scene where Jerry was all, "ZOMG! IMMAFREAK!"

So I picked it up and started reading it today. Not much is happening, but it's mildly interesting. The way he talks is ok, but I think by the end it's really going to get on my nerves. At first it makes it easy to read, but then you start to get annoyed by it, and want to say, "SHUT UP, WILL YOU!" Anyhow, that's what I'm reading right now, I've got about 100 pages left to go tomorrow, so I plan to finish it. It's kind of weird going through 2 books in a matter of 3 days when I haven't read a book since December 2009, and no one for fun since July 2007.

Anyhow, I also remembered that John Green did some videos way back in 2008 about Catcher, so I thought I'd post them below!

The Average Gatsby

I'm sorry, but I don't think it was great.

Really, I don't think it was that good. Was it terrible? No. But, what makes it so wonderful? There weren't that many likable characters, the writing wasn't that wonderful, the story was often times not all that interesting. So in the end, it was only "meh".

I read this because John Green is going to discuss it on his vlog, so I wanted to be up on it so I know what he's talking about. I'll post a link once that video is up. Am I mad I "wasted" time reading it? No. I just didn't think it was that good. There's a lot that could be said about "old money" and "new money" and the ideas of the American Dream, but overall, only mediocre.

Now What?

Last night was the end of the era of Harry Potter. The last book was obviously a huge draw down, but as a fan there was still the 3 or 4 movies left to wait for. But after 12:01 Friday morning, there is nothing left to wait for. The movies are not complete, the books have been done for a few years now. It's kind of strange that there is nothing on the horizon for Potter nerds like me to be excitedly awaiting for.

As I said in my review, the movie was brilliant, and a perfect send off for a series that has captured a lot of my attention for the past 12 years or so. I was involved in the books before I ever read them, because I had to sell them. In fact, I was dressing up like Harry Potter before I even knew anything ABOUT the books. Working at SOK, we sold the books, and I was there when book 4 came out. I remember calling people on our waitlist to tell them the books were in and that they could come pick them up. I remember the cardboard cut out of Harry that looked a lot like the cover of Goblet in front of our store. I remember Clara putting a lightening sticker on my head, changing my name tag to say Harry and putting a cape on me. But I hadn't read any of the books yet. Shortly after, I did read the books, all 4 of them, and go through them very quickly. I had to get through them before the first movie came out, and everyone had told me how good they were supposed to be.

So I read them, and I thought they were ok. Sorcerer's Stone was fun, it had an element of mystery, it had excitement, and it had a very vivid world. I finished it pretty quick then moved on to Chamber of Secrets. Again, it was ok, had some fun stuff in it, and was a fun read. It wasn't until Prisoner of Azkaban that I really became hooked. There was such a change in the writing on that one, and all the sudden there was all this back story coming out. The betrayal of the Potters, the death at the hands of Voldemort due to a man who was now after Harry. The twist that in fact that man had been loyal and the true traitor had been still alive. The books shifted for me and far more interesting. I was hooked and burned through Goblet of Fire in no time... and then the waiting.

It was a long wait for the fifth book, longer than any other wait. And then the wait for the 6th, and finally the wait for the end. Waiting was in fact, half the fun. Getting to discuss theories about what was going to happen, reading message boards, listening to podcasts. And then after 2007, the final story was told, and the movies were all that was left. That's over now too.

Harry Potter was huge for fans. The waiting allowed people to connect to others all over the place. It gave you something to talk about even if you didn't really know each other simply because it was something so many people had in common. It also helped shape people's views and opinions. It taught people that reading was important, that choices matter, that people can make a difference, and it translated into the world in a way that I'm sure J.K. Rowing wasn't expecting.

The books spawned groups like the HP Alliance, a charity organization that has been responsible for working to help people around the world. It helped shine a light on people like John and Hank Greek who really became popular thanks to their love of Potter, and as a result their group has done an excellent job helping to "reduce world suck" in the form of FOUR jumbo jets filled with donated supplies after the Haiti earthquake. There are surely many more examples, some even small individuals things that resulted due to these books.

So, what now? Is this the end?

No. Fans who have taken these stories to heart, and who love them will not end. They will still discuss, they will still fight for what's right, and they'll still work in groups like the HP Alliance. So, while there's nothing left "to do" there is still a lot of HP left in the world. We still can look forward to Pottermore, the "Scottish Book" and I'll bet we'll see this world again on pages someday in the future.

For now, it's been a great experience, and I'm interested to see what we do now.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II Review

Well, as you all know (at least if you know me at all), last night I was at the midnight opening of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2. Actually, we got tickets to a double feature, so at 9:00 we got to see part 1, and then at 12:01 we got to see part 2. It was nice to see part one, then have about a 45 minute break to get refills, stretch, and then be ready for part 2. It was also nice to not have to wait in a killer long queue of people for the 12:01 showing, because we got to get our seats for part 1, and keep them, so really it was pretty stress free.

Going into part 2, you know it is going to have to be full of action, because the second half of the book is where all the action takes place. Part 1 probably would have been better titled "Harry Potter and the Deathly Exposition" or "Harry Potter and the Deathly Camping Trip" as not much happens. In contrast, part two of the film is where everything that's really important happens.

The movie did not disappoint, because the majority of film takes place in Hogwarts. You open to get the great sequence of breaking into Gringotts, which stayed pretty true to the book. The Dragon was excellent, and the escape was exactly how I pictured it. All in all, very well done. However, that only took the first 15-20 minutes of the movie (or perhaps it only felt like that), so that means the rest of the film is devoted to the final part of the book, which is the battle at Hogwarts.

I have to say that I was sad not to get much about the Dumbledore history, but they hit on a few points, and all in all I'm not that bent out of shape because it's a movie, and they need to keep the plot rolling. Of course, there were also some deviations from the book, but again, it wasn't anything that I thought was inappropriate (such as in movie 4 where you had a waste of time dragon chase when they could have added more important plot). So, I wasn't displease with any of the additions, or really about any of the parts that were left out. In the end I felt they did a perfect job putting in all the scenes fans would have wanted to see.

The final battle was excellent, mixed some humor with loads of sadness at the death of favorite characters. The Prince's Tale was excellent, and had all the elements that I loved from it, and even added a few shots that I thought were perfect, such as Snape entering the Potter's house after the attack. The scene in the forest before Harry's "death" was wonderful, pulling lines right out of the book. The scene in King's Cross with Harry and Dumbledore was just about perfect. Even the epilogue was great, and for me I was thrilled to hear the composer go back to the ending music from movies 1 and 2 for that scene.

As a movie, it was action packed, and well done. As a fan watching the movie, I couldn't have been happier with how it turned out. It had everything I wanted, it was missing virtually nothing that I really wanted to see on screen, and was a wonderful end to the series. My rating is see it. I saw it opening night in 3-D. If you like 3-D then go for it, if you don't, it really didn't have any of those cheap 3-D tricks in it, so I actually had no issues for it. I plan to see it again sometime soon. So, that's a Full Price, IMAX, 3D Ticket rating. It's worth the money.

Tomorrow is the night! We are 24 hours, 49 minutes and 45 seconds away from Deathly Hallows part 2! I'm excited yet sad. But, it's almost here! I will go with excitement... but what happens after it's over???

Bored.

First, I'm running out of things to clean. I cleaned my office today. Not like, picked up the piles of papers and dusted. Like took everything out of the closet and rearranged it. Like, made it clean enough that people could walk through if I were selling the place. Like, so clean you can still see the Dyson tracks.

So, when I'm out of things to clean, I have to find other things to do. For example, I can upload video. Except that I'm nearly out of space on my hard drive for uploads. That also means I can't scan many pictures either. I've also revamped the web page.

I suppose I could read, but that usually is too quiet. It's always too quiet.

Becky is in Denver tonight, she had her fancy-shmancy business trip to meet with clients and then take them out to dinner. Now, I feel that in this time in technology, business travel really is practically unnecessary with programs like Skype, but apparently you can't kiss ass via a webcam? Anyway, that means it's extra quiet around the house, but she flies home tomorrow, so just a short trip.

In other news, apparently PESG doesn't want to pay me unemployment, so I had to answer this big questionnaire and get it back to UIA. In related news, I have no new job prospects. I keep applying, but I'm not even getting interviews. Apparently a college graduate with 10 years of work experience (5 management, 5 corporate), who graduated at the top of the class isn't the kind of person that companies are looking for...

On that note, I'm going back to watch episodes of Sailor Moon online... because that's all I got.

I Was Running.

Today I decided to get up early and run. Actually the plan was that Becky and I both would get up and run, however we hit snooze too many times so she wouldn't have time to do it and I ended up going alone. It was terrible. I haven't done an outside run since September, so that sucked. In addition, I haven't been on the treadmill in ages, so that sucked double. Turns out, my time was quite terrible, though could have been far worse.

How About A Temple of Doom?

Now, I love Indiana Jones. I mean, who doesn't love the adventure, the whip, and the hat? However, I to this day have NEVER seen Temple of Doom. I've seen all of them except Temple of Doom, even Indiana Jones and the God-Damn Space Aliens... until today. Yes, that's right, I'm watching it now for the first time ever, and thought I'd "live blog" while watching it. By live I mean I'll write as I watch.

First impression, I feel like this is directed by someone else. I mean, Raiders was awesome, but this cheesy intro is totally weird. I'm not even fond of the font they're using the credits.

Ok, this opening number just needs to stop. Chinese "Anything Goes?" Sorry, that just doesn't go. Plus, why are you saying "Anything Goes" in English, but the rest of the song is in Chinese???

Ok... what is with this "catch the diamond/antidote business?? Are we now a Three Stooges movie? Where's Harpo and Groucho? Oh, I know, they're actually somewhere being funny.

Did he just say "doll"? That seems weird, I'm used to "sweetheart" or something of the sort.

My gran would totally hate this movie, because she'd be going off on those pilots and how they're sneaky, just like when they bombed Pearl Harbor, despite the fact that I'm pretty sure they're supposed to be Chinese.

Ok, so Mythbusters totally confirmed that the inflatable escape slides could actually be used to slow you down enough to keep you from being all like, *dead*, so thanks Indiana Jones!

Ok, so we are 19 minutes in, and the "side kicks" are already annoying me. The woman is quite unlikable, and I'm surprised that Steven Spielberg hasn't CGI'ed out the kid to make him less politically incorrect. I mean, if you get rid of the guns in ET, you have to get rid of the stereotypical asian kid in Indiana Jones. Or, you have to not be a d-bag and leave both. PICK A SIDE STEVEN!

Also, in a break from the movie, Becky is cooking a seafood risotto, and it smells REALLY good in here.

Where are you? LADY, you just jumped out of a plane on a raft, fell hundreds of feet, slid down a mountain, fell over a cliff... I'll tell you where you're at, you're at the corner of QUIT YOU'RE BITCHING and LUCKY TO BE ALIVE!

Ya know what this movie is missing? Nazis. So far our biggest "baddie" is a greedy Chinese mob boss, and now some evil raja.

Ok, so why in the world did he take the kid and the girl with him? Leave them in Shanghai, you don't need sidekicks, Indiana.

Flaw two of this movie: Indiana is not actually seeking anything. Indiana Jones is not the guy that waits around for something to happen, he goes out on adventures. And, he doesn't get stuck with irritating sidekicks...

I don't know why, but using the term "doll" is just really irritating me.

Actually, it's not very funny that she's all wet... actually it's about 60 seconds that could have been cut from the movie. Jeez, who'd this woman have to fuck to get into this.... oh... yeah.... Steven Spielberg... her husband... I guess this is actually just Indiana Jones and the Not Quite Comedy.

Really, this is the only one that George Lucas wasn't involved with the story. Now, after seeing Crystal Skull, you'd think that would actually be a good thing. But looking back at the original three, you'd have to come to the conclusion that perhaps the lack of Lucas had a negative effect on the story.

The dinner scene grosses me out. That is all. And now there are bugs.

I mean, that's going to get a little toasty... plus, shouldn't there be some sort of gas coming off of that shit?

Ok, I can now say that I've seen EVERY Indiana Jones movie. Nice. at the same time, it wasn't the best. In fact, if I had seen this movie first I may not have been all that interested in seeing any of the others. But hey, he helped those Indian villagers. It wasn't terrible, it just wasn't great. So now I just have to now try and reorder the movies from best to worse. Clearly it's still Raiders, Crusade, and I think it still would have to go Temple, Skull. Skull had good dialogue, but the story was just utter crap.

Taking It Back

Last night was a good time. This morning is less so... that is all I will say about it.

Today we had another BBQ with Jeff of the Britons and Chrissy. As Jeff is British, the party was a "Taking it Back" as in taking back the colonies for the British Empire! A joke of course, and just a late 4th of July-ish type party. It was a great time. We ate some snacks, and played a lot of Rock Band.

We also decided last night, and it was taken care of tonight, that we have tickets on Thursday night for a DOUBLE FEATURE OF HARRY POTTER! WOOT WOOT! Yes, at 9:00 we will have a screening of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part I, and then at 12:01 we will see the FINAL Harry Potter movie! I will contain my excitement, sadness, and feelings about that for now and will post later on the end of Harry Potter and what I think of that. For now, I'm excited that I'm actually going to a midnight release because I haven't since Goblet of Fire!

Can't wait... and yet, can.

Revenge

So, my revenge for yesterday's thrilling day of video games is that I had to clean today. Like a lot.

Tonight Master Jefferson is coming over for a little BBQ for a few hours, so I had a lot that I needed to do, and then a bunch of stuff that I just wanted to do. So, the whole house got a nice clean that it needed. I've been doing the daily maintenance since I'm unemployed, but it hasn't got a nice deep clean in a while.

So, that's what I did today. I swept, mopped things, shined things, did dishes, put crap away that has been hanging out in places because there is nowhere else to put it. The result is a nice clean house.

After all that cleaning I also had to run to the Kroger to get some food supplies. I decided to make some kabobs, and I'm excited because we haven't grilled much this year because we were out of propane until last weekend. So, it should be delicious and fun!

Also for fun... I sell propane and propane accessories...

Nothing

That's what I did today. I played a video game. That is it.

A Series Of Tubes!

I've been working online all day so far. For some reason I decided to just completely revamp the entire web page for Drama. Then I decided that I didn't want to manage the photos, so I got a PhotoBucket account for them. That way all the hundreds, and thousands actually, of pictures I have of shows people can now download, so that happened.

Other than that not much is going on. My computer makes my office really hot. I got a call from the temp agency that they may have a place that'd like to interview me (I'll hear more in a day or two - or so they say).

Other than that, I've been glued to a computer all day.

Rehearsal at 7:00, so that should be amusing, we shall see.

Stir This For Me...

I'm going stir crazy.

There's really nowhere for me to go. I don't have a job. I haven't had any interviews. I don't really do much. It's driving me crazy. I also feel I need to actually go somewhere. For more than 2 days. I've not gone anywhere since April 2009, and it's driving me crazy.

I haven't posted anything meaningful in days. That's because I don't have anything to say because I see no one, do nothing, and just sit around cleaning. It's also quite stressful.

4th of July!!!

I love the 4th of July! Cookouts, fireworks, parades (even though I never go to them). It's fun.

Today we had some people over. Then we watched fireworks on TV, which was kind of lame, but it allowed for the mocking of terrible hosts. Seriously, Nick Lachey??? Apparently it's 2003...

Other than that, just kind of a quiet 4th. I think next year perhaps we should go somewhere. New York? Boston? Philadelphia? Let the planning begin!

Little Early

Lots of fireworks going off tonight. Guess people can't wait for tomorrow, or decided to have their party today rather than wait for tomorrow.

Around here we got a lot of stuff done. First we painted the god-awful-ugly screen door. It was "cranberry" but not it's black. The main door is still that same ugly "cranberry" that the screen was, but we have paint for that too. That will be good because we changed the door when we bought the place, and since it was a different style handle, there are unpainted spots on the door. It'll be nice to not look quite so hobo.

In other news, tomorrow is the 4th of July. WOOO! I guess we're having people over, which shall be nice.

Got Stuff T' Do!

Apparently today we are going to Great Lakes Crossing and the Cracker Barrel. We have a gift card to Cracker Barrel, and Great Lakes Crossing is for funzies. It's already hot as balls out, which is no good, but it's also humid. BOO!

Tonight we have dinner with the various -wiches, which shall be nice.

Other than that, piss off... er, I mean, nothing going on.

Random Thoughts

I was looking at my stats tab, and you can see where I started teaching because the visits dipped drastically on my blog. That's because I was slow to post, and didn't have tons to say.

Harry Potter 7.1 has the worst sound track of any of the Harry Potter movies. In fact, I haven't even bothered to buy it.

We could use some rain, the grass is crunchy.

I wish more things were available instantly on Netflix.

It's too hot out.

For some reason I always end up with piles of papers in my office. No matter how often I file, days later I have a stack of papers that is like 3 reams of paper high.
