Well, the year is coming to a close tonight so it's time to take a look at my goals for the year and see how it's going. I'm actually not sure how I did, I know I made progress towards them, but I don't know how many of them I actually got to. But, the goal of the goals was to have them and work toward something, so even if I didn't meet the goal it doesn't really matter because the point was to have a focus, not necessarily to complete the goal. So here we go!
Goal Number One - Get A New Job: I'm sad to say that next year will be the third time this goal is on my list. I think part of my problem with this is that since the teaching thing is not going anywhere I don't really know what to do. I don't have a plan B really, because I don't know what else I'd want to do with my life. Education is kind of my thing, so it's kind of like going to a restaurant that you love that serves only one thing on the menu that you enjoy only to find out that they're out of it. The good news on this is that on January 13th I'll be starting classes at WCC for a new field so perhaps that will help me out some. I'm also considering going to EMU to get my Masters which would allow me to teach college if I wanted. Or perhaps getting certified in a secondary field, which to my surprise I could get classes in biology, which was one of my favorite of the sciences. Who knows. I do know that I've not made it on this goal, and we're coming up on the four year anniversary of leaving Borders.
Goal Number Two - Read At Least 12 Books: Well, I failed on this one, but I came close with a total of nine reads this year. I had the four plays: Little Women, As You Like It, The Odd Couple, and The Odd Couple - Female Version. I also read a book on CSS coding, Sacre Bleu, The Spectacular Now, The Book Thief, and Enders Game. Nine isn't too bad, but I slacked off in the middle of the year. I'm not sure why I just didn't feel like reading much. But I like the goal so I'm sure I'll keep it for next year.
Goal Number Three - Go Out West: This didn't happen. Sad. I'd like to get this one done sometime next year since it didn't work out this year.
Goal Number Four - Be Consistently Active: I was more active this year than last, but I wasn't consistently so I guess I'll say this one wasn't met, but progress was good.
Goal Number Five - Consistently Log Meals: Win on this one! I was very consistent on logging my meals.
Goal Number Six - Digitize My Photos: I made no progress on this goal at all. I'll probably carry this over to the next year.
Goal Number Seven - Have Seven New Experiences: Well as of last count I had six of the seven. It was a fun goal and I probably could have thought back and come up with something to get the seven but since it wasn't memorable enough I'm just going to keep it here at six of seven.
So there we have it. The goals and where they stand after a year. I'll come up with some new goals for 2014. Happy New Year!

Rat Bastards!
Rat Bastards! We are almost done with season five of Mad Men, but we don't have season six because Tivo didn't record it. They also only have it for pay On Demand, $2-$3 per episode. The website doesn't stream it either. That's a load of horse poop! I am not paying $32 to watch last season. That's totally crazy. I have no interest in owning the show either, so I'm a bit annoyed. I checked the listing and they are showing episode one of season six on the 5th, but that is it for January. They don't have a listing year for February. I don't know why they aren't showing them in sequential order. Stupid. Unamused.

Reading
Well I'm happy to say that I was able to knock two more books out in my reading goal. I'm pretty sure I still won't make it to my goal for the year but I was reading, so that's good. In the past week I finished The Book Thief. I really liked it, it had kind of a strange style that I don't normally go for, but it worked ok. It takes place in Germany during World War II, but it's not necessarily about the war, but more about the people who lived during that period. Sure they have experiences with friends/family having to go to war, and there is an element with a Jew hiding from being taken to a concentration camp, but it's more about the life of a girl that just happens to take place with the war as a backdrop. They made a movie that I wanted to see but I had to finish the book first, and now it's not in theaters. I liked it though.
The other book I finished was Ender's Game, which is a sci-fi young adult book about a boy who is being trained as a soldier. It was really interesting and I got through it very quickly. It wasn't overly surprising, but it also wasn't the most obvious of books. So it wasn't like I was sitting there predicting where everything was going to go. I liked the story for the most part, though there were some strange kind of elements to it such as the video game he played. But overall I found it interesting and a fun read. They also made a movie of this, but by the time I finished it, the theaters weren't playing it. Sad.
Anyhow, that's two more books down off my list. I'll have to get back to reading. I still have two J.K. Rowling books that I have to read, I think they will be next on my list.

I really don't understand how my grandma still has this wrapping paper. She has literally had it since I was a child. I think this is circa say 1990? Every year I get at least one gift wrapped in it. She surely bought the entire stock of it back twenty years ago and has just been working through it ever since. Crazy.

Party Time
Tonight we had our third annual party for our theatre company, and it was a ton of fun. We actually had nearly all our original cast members from our first show make an appearance, so it was really neat to have everyone back and having a nice time. We had our traditional white elephant exchange which was a lot of fun as usual. We also played Cards Against Humanity, while eating our traditional pizza and doughnuts.
It was a good time, and it pretty much marks the end of the holiday season as it's our last event of the year. It's a nice way to close out the year. Now onward to 2014!

Random
I have to say I'm really sad that Lenders got rid of their frozen bagels. Their current bagels I really don't love. They have a weird taste. I don't like them. It makes me sad. I really don't have much to talk about today, so today you get my thoughts on bagels.

Today we went to the Cheesecake Factory in Novi. It's been open since August but it's really hard to get in because it is so popular that it is often a three hour wait just to get a table. Well today we finally made it there and it only was about an hour wait. I have to say the service wasn't great, and the food was to be expected. I ended up trying a new cheesecake because it was a special holiday cheesecake called peppermint bark. It was tasty, but had a bit too much crunchy to it, but I liked it.

Binge Watching
It's weird because clearing off the Tivo is almost like a chore. The Tivo has been around 75% full consistently because we've had nearly all five seasons of Mad Men on it. Well we've started binge watching and going through probably around 10 to 14 episodes a night. We've worked our way all the way through seasons one through four and are about to start season five.
I'm really enjoying the show, which is obvious since we're going through so many episodes per night. I'm really not liking Betty, she's quite annoying. And I don't understand Peggy, she seems very inconsistent as a character. Sometimes I like her, but then she does things that really don't make sense to me so I don't quite understand her. Also, can we all agree that Don's had is way to small for his head. He looks just silly.
Anyhow, I'm having a great time with it. Every holiday season we seem to binge watch some show, and this year it apparently is Mad Men. It'll be nice because we'll be all caught up probably by the time the new episodes start up. I'll just have to figure out how to get season six.

Christmas Eve
As usual tonight was the annual Christmas Eve gathering of the extended family. We had the cousins in from Virginia, which was nice. However that also brought drama since Grandma didn't come because my aunt was there. It's really kind of annoying that people can't just stop being crappy for even one night and just have some damn food and visit with each other.
We also had fun because we decided to make pizza for dinner, but the cornmeal started burning on the pizza stone since we had to make so many and since our oven doesn't vent to the outside it got very smokey and the smoke detector started going off. We ended up having to open the windows and the doors to vent it out. It got a bit cold.
Well, anyhow Christmas is well underway. We have had our friend gathering, the family gathering. Tomorrow is the Christmas day activities, and then this weekend we have the That party. The season is moving right along.

Last Day
The last day before time off is always wonderful! Today is the last day of work for me until January 2nd, and that's freaking great. That's nine days where I won't have to be in work. I really thought about taking today off, and then taking the two days after New Years off too so that I could have taken two full weeks off, but I don't feel like I should waste days off like that when I already have nine off. Though 16 would have been delightful.
I don't know what I plan for the time off, I would love to just have a couple days of doing nothing, perhaps just sitting around watching some TV or do some work on my computer doing some scanning of old photos or something along those lines.
Anyhow, happy vacation starting tomorrow!

I Insist On Difficulty
I'm really starting to become a grinch because I really am sick of everyone in my family having to make things a mess for no good reason or just being generally kind of shitty. Is it so hard to let people know what you want for Christmas? Is it so annoying to make a list that you have to get crabby and shitty about it? Do you deserve a present when I LITERALLY have not seen you since last Christmas? Do we really have to make every event so dramatic and so much family political bullshit in it?
I don't expect the TV Holiday Special version of the holidays. I don't expect it to be that Norman Rockwell vision of what things are supposed to be like. My standards are so low that my only request is that everyone stop acting like everything is such a terrible thing, that it's such a hassle, that someone owes you something, that your drama is more important that shutting your mouth and having a meal, that things from three or four decades ago really are beyond the statute of limitations on being all pissed about it.
I'm going to say without a doubt Thanksgiving was the worst time ever. People sat around a table silently eating. Grumpy faces on. Seriously? What in the world does everyone have to be all pissed off about. Not to mention the added drama coming up with additional guests and the additional family drama.
To be blunt: What's the point? If all we want to do is be pissy, talk about family drama, be unhappy, why are we bothering to even get together. If we can't come and have a good time, then why even pretend just because someone said we were supposed to.
How about this, why don't people stop making shitty life choices, making shitty comments, forming sides to issues that don't concern anyone else, and just be good people instead. For real. I think I'd like to just push all the older generation out and just let the younger generation get together. We actually like each other and don't have all sorts of shit going on to make things messy and stupid. Perhaps instead of a kids table we should have a grown-ups table and put them all in time out.

We went to Gratzi for dinner the other day, and apparently they put a Santa hat on the statue over the bar. It amused me, though I'm sad that the red pain kind of blends in from this angle.

Let Love In
Can someone please explain to me why people can't just stop being assholes and just love each other? Like, for real-real, not for play-play. You've got maybe 80, 90, perhaps 100 years to do something with your life and you are ruining your life, and the lives of those around you by being petty, self-absorbed, controlling, manipulative, suck wads who don't seem to care about the consequences of your actions. I mean really, do you want to get to the end of your life, look back, and see a hate-filled bunch of regrets that kept you from being happy, and good, and complete?
Perhaps instead of taking the self-centered route we could all learn a little grace and simply learn to be civil. I'm around people I don't like ALL THE TIME, but I keep it to myself, and move on. I don't seek it out, but for the good of everyone I do what needs to get done and I don't let it get under my skin. Is that so hard to do? Is the simple ability to coexist in the same place so hard that modern society is unable to bear such a heavy burden?
Lets be honest here, no one is inviting HITLER over for tea. Crazy Uncle Manson isn't coming over for presents and egg nog. Pol Pot isn't going to unexpectedly drop by with a little something for the kids. So, you're telling me that you can't be civil for a couple of hours in the presence of someone you don't like? You can't check your baggage at the door and keep your mouth shut about your inane relationship drama and keep a civil tongue in your mouth? You can't resist stirring the turd and forming sides on issues that are absurd to begin with?
The clock is ticking, and when you get to the last moments of life I can comfortably predict that you won't be sitting there thinking that you wish you had hated more, been more petty, been a less kind and gracious person. You'll wish you weren't such an dick that made everyone else miserable because you couldn't get your head out of your ass long enough to see that your nonsense was just nonsense.

I don't know why but Sam always seems to look nervous or upset. I don't remember what he was doing right here, but he was standing being himself.

Gratitude
The past week really has sucked monkey balls. However, I'm super grateful to have Becky around to help me through all of it. I know she was very sad about it all too, but she instead focused on me to make sure that I was ok, and helped me with some of the more difficult times. She is a wonderful person who is always there when you need someone. She quietly took the lead on things and helped guide me through and I'm just so happy to have her.

P4A
So, as some of you may know I am a big old Nerdfighter, and every year they have the Project for Awesome. Pretty much it's a charity drive where you donate and people post videos about what charities the money should go to. Then you watch the videos and vote for what charities get the money. It's a lot of fun, an if you have a little to give this year it's not a bad thing to donate to.
I believe they are fundraising until the end of the week, though the voting ends tomorrow. They're doing quite well, and they have some great charities that they're putting forward for voting. I'm of course a fan of This Star Won't Go Out, which helps families who have a child with cancer. The charity was started by Esther Earl's family after she passed away to help people who had to go through the same struggles they did. But, there are many other projects you can donate too.
Here is a video that tells all about it. If you read this and the donations close, you can still donate to "The Foundation to Decrease World Suck" any time of year, which does some good stuff.

For The Holiday
After a week of blogging about Simon I will end with one final note. Simon was a rescue dog. As I mentioned in my blog last week we got him from the Humane Society of Huron Valley. We without a doubt rescued him. He was there for quite some time, and they were getting full, so he was in need of a home. We gave him that home and he lived with us for nearly 16 years.
The HSHV has a lot of animals looking for homes just like Simon. They are there waiting for someone to take them home, love them, and be their companions. Cats, dogs, they even help with horses, and right now have a rabbit called "The Phil Collins of Rabbits", which is an amazingly silly name.
This holiday I decided rather than blow a ton of money on gifts, I would scale back a bit and in honor of Simon, donate to the HSHV. If you happen to be in a position to do this I encourage it. They helped us find a magnificent friend (we also have Sam, and have friend who have also adopted through them). If you don't have the money consider volunteering, or even later in the year dropping off a bag of food for them to help feed all those lovely animals while they wait to find their homes.

One Last Time
Simon's final day was really hard on me. I knew that it was coming, I knew that it had to happen soon. I thought originally it would be Tuesday, then couldn't do it. I thought perhaps we'd go to Saturday. In the end it happened on Wednesday.
We can home and he was stuck on the wood floor. He had trouble with the wood, but even lately he was having trouble getting up off the carpet. The last few days he couldn't stand without help, and spent most the time sleeping. He had a poo accident and got it on him pretty bad. I couldn't get him to stand even when I helped him up, he just fell immediately to the floor again.
Becky had talked to me during the day and called to find out about the hours. We knew it was going to be that day, and coming home it was clear he really couldn't stand or walk anymore. So, I picked him up and took him upstairs to give him a bath. He didn't resist anything as I took him up and put him in the tub. He didn't bark or whine like he usually does in the tub. He didn't try to escape. He simply sat and soaked. I cleaned him up nicely and took him out. It was cold outside so I got the brush and blow dryer and made sure he was totally dry.
I cried the entire time thinking about how this was the last time I would give him a bath. The last time I'd take him outside. The last moments before it happens. I don't like knowing. It lets me think about all those last moments. Before loading him in the car I set him down in the yard and propped him up so he could stand and look out one last time. He seemed tired and didn't really seem to want to spend much time, so I picked him up and put him in the back seat. I sat with him as we rode to Ann Arbor. He rested his head on my leg and slept, barely moving. I cried more.
The vet was very clinical about everything. I was not pleased because it was the vet I DID NOT LIKE AT ALL! I almost went somewhere else simply to be sure we avoided her. Becky said she DID NOT want to see that vet, but in she came. She was ok. She exclaimed that Simon was "Spectacularly old" and that she didn't know how to get a lab to live longer than 12 years, but apparently we did know. She was like a person who knew what she wanted to say but not how to say it in a way that wasn't slightly abrasive or a little too blunt. She sent us a follow up sympathy card, but it was just not quite on the mark.
There was no struggle. He didn't even react to her when she came in and touched him. It was like he was ready to go. Ready to sleep. to rest
She asked me to pet his ears to distract him while she trimmed his hair, inspected his leg and insert the IV. He paid no attention, he didn't look back, he didn't move. He was quiet and calm. Almost asleep already. I pet him the entire time, and then he was gone.
It was a very hard day. I miss him. I know he was too old, but it''s still very hard. I know that everyone says it was time, and that he was ready. But it's still hard.
The Worst Of Times
This Is Why We Can't Have Nice Things
You can never really have anything dark to wear when you have a white dog. No matter how much you lint brush, sticky brush, or even take packing tape to your suits, coats, pants, or anything else, you always end up looking like you just rolled around on the carpet. Fur was always an issue with Simon. I don't know how he wasn't bald because it seemed like there was more hair on the floor than there was on him. In fact every spring when we'd open up the doors and let the fresh air in, we'd find doggy tumble weed blow across the dining room. Sure we thought we had got it all with the broom or the vacuum, but sure enough it was like some western with a white ball of fur flitting across the house. I suppose that was the price you pay for having so much awesome... it just falls off him and wants to go with you everywhere.
Ouch! No wait, I'm good
The other price was the stupid things he'd do sometimes. One such occasion involved a yelping dog limping around the house and an emergency vet on a Saturday afternoon. We weren't sure exactly what was going on, but Simon was having some serious pain. So we found an emergency animal hospital that was actually open on a weekend afternoon and took him in. Of course when we arrived he did that thing that he does when we take him to the vet: Perk up and act like nothing's wrong. It's always nice and embarassing when we took him in with a specific problem and when he arrived it was all fine and dandy.
The vet we saw turned out to be our normal guy at the time and he was like, "Oh, they do this, let me guess you have something high he can jump off of, right? Labs, they like to jump, so he has jumped off your deck and strained himself. Nothing serious so we will give you some pain medication in case he seems to hurt, but he will be alright." I actually really liked this vet beause he would always say exactly what he was going to do, though he said it to Simon, not us. "Ok, well I am now going to check your leg by holding it and feeling your shoulder as I move your leg." And Simon would respond and I could almost hear him saying, "Yes, that sound reasonable. Do that and let me know if anything seems problematic."
Nope, Not Good
On more than one occasion he was taken to the vet only to show no signs of the problems we were seeing at home. He would instantly perk up at the idea of a car ride and then spend the time sniffing around. Though on the occasion that he had The Serious Poops. Like SERIOUS! I was sitting on the loveseat grading papers and he came and sat next to me in front of the loveseat . Suddenly it smelled pretty bad. I was like "DUDE! THAT GAS!!!" But then it got worse and stronger and I looked down and he was sitting in a puddle of doggy chocolate. It was AWFUL! I took him into the vet when it was clear he had The Serious Major Poops. They looked him over and decided to take his temperature. Now I'm not in the field of animal medicine, but I don't think I'd want to head straight into the danger zone to find the temperature. Sure enough, he pooped right on the poor tech's hand. A nice liquid poo. They decided to keep him over night to help us from having poo everywhere, which was nice because they washed him too.
He never had many major issues for the most part, though in the later years he had a couple of bladder infections which were not fun to deal with. He also had this nasty warty thing removed form his leg that was dangling there like a morbid meat decoration. Totally gross. But other than the poops and the infections he was amazingly healthy. Every time he wasn't doing well he also bounced back pretty well. Over the past few years there have been a few times taking him in that I thought this was surely the end and they were going to tell me there was some serious issue and nothing they could do. But in the end he was ok.
BEHOLD MY SECOND SCROTUM!
The worst thing about him was the tumor that developed right on his bum when he was about eight or so. It started as a little lump then slowly got larger and larger. When we had them remove his foot wart thing we asked that they remove the tumor as well. To be honest that was the primary reason for the surgery. However he was already quite old at that point and he really couldn't handle the anesthetic, which almost made his heart explode. They said we could take him to a heart specialist at the expense of thousands of dollars. At the time we expected he'd live a standard lifetime and that it didn't make sense to do that. Turns out he lived for twice as long as we expected.
Overall his giant tumor sack handing off his bum wasn't much of a problem. There was the time my nephew tried to pick it like an apple. Simon did not approve of that in the least. It was also really disgusting to look at, especially when it started growing weird black hair. GROSS! Overally it was just kind of gross, and no one wanted it to touch them when he sat near them.
As he got older it got bigger... more dangly-er. More terrible. However as he got to his final year it began to work more like a mud flap... which was great. There's nothing like coming in and having to wipe your dog's ass so he doesn't get poo over things. I discovered this issue when I went into my office and found a spear of poo on my computer at about dog ass level. A year of wiping dog butt was never enjoyable. I always say I rather deal with poo than wee. Wee puts me from 0 to rage. We had trouble with that too in the last year or so because he kind of dripped everywhere. Or walked and peed, which was the worst trail in the world. Follow the yellow piss trail around the house. We got him a doggy diaper, which solved that problem. But his giant poo catcher was not fun at all.

The Best Of Times
Yesterday I posted a story about Simon shortly after we got him, but today I thought I'd post a few more good times or silly things that he did over the nearly 16 years he was with me.
The Chase Me Chase Me Game
Simon liked to run when he got out of the house. He had free roaming of the back yard, but if he got out the front he would just bolt, and he wasn't easy to catch because he was very fast and had unlimited stamina. I guess perhaps that is how he came to be with us because he was found and never claimed. He easily could have had the same thing happen to him with us, though he always came back if we waited long enough, say 15-20 minutes.
The least convenient time he pulled this on us was one morning as we were getting ready to head down to Cedar Point for the weekend. We were loading the car and out he went, and of course immediately ran. The thing about it was that if you ran after him, he'd just run faster. It was like a game to him, and he always won. In this case he made it halfway around the block before he decided to run toward someone's back yard only to find out there was a fence and then something interesting caught his nose and we were able to catch him.
As time went on it became clear that he was really just playing a game and the more you chased the more he ran, but if you stopped chasing he'd come back. In fact if you watched him he'd look back to make sure you were following him. He continued to do this until he got pretty old, and I recall the last time we played the Chase Me Chase Me game. Again he made it out the front and bolted. I chased him for a few minutes but then decided to stop and hide behind a tree. As usual he looked to see if I was in pursuit and when it was clear that I wasn't he immediately turned around and started walking back. He didn't have his stamina that he once had, so he was ready to come back pretty quick. When he passed the tree I was behind I jumped out and grabbed him. He looked shocked and surprised that I suddenly appeared like that which was amusing for me, but he never ran for it. Though, we also began to go on longer and more regular walks, so he was less inclined to run since he got a long walk every night all around the neighborhood.
Out The Window
When we first got Simon we lived in a bi-level house, and we had a large family room on the back of
the house with a desk and a computer as well as a couch and tv. We didn't have a lot in this room probably on account of at the time we had been poor so long that we didn't have enough stuff to fill the whole house. One trick I liked to do was take Simon's ball and throw it out the window. Being slightly below ground, that meant the window was about four feet off the floor of the house, and the ground was about a foot or so off the other side. Sometimes this meant Simon would run upstairs to be let out. Well one day when I wasn't at the computer desk I threw the ball out the window, and he jumped up on the desk, onto the ledge that was below the window and right out the window. It became a fun trick because it was very fluid, almost like watching tigers jumping through flaming hoops at the circus or something.
Christmas Gifts
Simon had a pretty good nose, which we found out very quickly. Every year we'd get him a doggy christmas stocking with balls and toys in it. The first year we had with him for some reason we wrapped it up and put it under the tree. He never touched the presents, but when Christmas morning came we told him to get his present and he picked out his and then proceeded to open it himself. It always took a bit of work because he never really figured out that he could hold it with one paw and then rip the paper with the other. He also never tried to rip the paper off with his mouth. So we would spend a good few minutes watching him knock his present around the living room trying to get the paper off before one of us would eventually hold one side of it so he could properly rip the wrapping paper off.
Carry All The Toys, Hide All The Toys
In a related story, these gifts usually came with a few different toys, sometimes holiday themed with a candy cane, or a wreath and they all had squeaky bits so when he chewed on them they would make noise. It was fun because we could squeak one and he'd come running. Often I'd hid it under me or in the couch cushion before he made it to me and he'd look at me like "WHERE IS IT!?" I'd then tell him I didn't know where it was and he'd start sniffing around and practically push me over to find where I put it. He was VERY intense about his toys. One of the things I loved most was he would always find a way to fit the most number of toys in his mouth at any given time. So if he had five he'd find a way to pick them all up. Sometimes this meant finding the right order to pick them up so that he could get the maximum number of toys in his mouth. He'd then take them all outside, and usually hid most of them under the deck, in the bushes, or just leave them strewn about for us to play fetch. The best was if he was outside while you were mowing because he obviously assumed that if you were outside the purpose of that was to play fetch with him. So, as you would mow he would suddenly bring out all the toys that he had hidden about the yard. You'd think that he only had one or two left that hadn't been thrown out, but you'd come to find he had a dozen in strategic places in the yard. And to be sure you threw them he'd put them down right in your mow path so you had to stop and pick it up and throw it.
The worst was when one finally was destroyed to the point that it needed to be thrown out. So you'd send it to the trash thinking he'd never notice, yet he always seemed to know. Inevitably when we throw one out he would spend all his time looking for the missing toy. He'd pull all his toys out of the basket we kept them in. He'd line them up and then go back searching the basket, around the basket, he'd then bark to be let out to no doubt search his little hiding spots outside. It was amusing, but also kind of sad because it was sort of like a kid with their favorite toy trying to figure out where it went. But, he was clearly a smart cookie.
All The Rest
There are a few other memories that I quite enjoy, but not necessarily stories. He used to have a yellow
Tupperware container that we put his food in. He was a big of a pig, and liked to eat, but whenever it got empty he'd walk around the house carrying it flipped up over his nose and kind of snorting around. I wish I had a picture of that, it always cracked me up.
He also took to sleeping with me in the bed. It really wasn't a big deal because I had a queen bed and it was just me. He'd lay out at the bottom of my bed and snooze there. Though he also liked to spread out, as did I so there was more than one occasion where he'd be taking up space and my feet would push on him. I remember one particular night where he was in the way and that happened and he just snarled at me like he was going to eat my foot, then got up, walked over to the couch jumped up and glared at me from across the room.
He also loved the snow, he particularly liked eating it. I always enjoyed making snow balls and throwing them for him. Sometimes he'd be either close enough for far enough to jump up and catch them in the air. That was always fun. However I also like making snowballs and throwing them far out into the yard where he'd try to get them, like a ball. He'd usually come to where they landed and start snorting around trying to find them. He was unamused by my evil witch craft.
He also kind of reminded me of my grandpa. He liked to go out on the deck and just sit and watch. When we moved to our current house he'd sit on the landing where he'd get a good view, or stand at the back door, or lay at the front door during the summer and just watch. Had to see what was going on, and of course bark at anything that might be moving around.
Sometimes he could hold his poos as he made it to the end. That was terrible. What was funny was that he would drop a giant dude in the living room, then look around all offended like he couldn't believe we would do such a thing. Though this also comes from the dog that pooted so loud he woke himself up and look at his buns as if wondering what that sound was.
He also was not above stealing things that were totally in his reach. Last year at our annual christmas party one of the guests had their pizza sitting on a cooler full of bottled water and was chatting. Simon walked right up and assuming it was his just ate the pizza right off it. He did the same thing when living at my mom's when my step dad was trying to broil some steaks. The broiler was under the stove in the drawer like many stoves, so he had the steaks on the broiler rack ready to go in and was doing something not paying attention. When he went to put them in he realized one steak was missing and found it in the living room being nom'd up by Simon.
He had funny eating habits. I loved it when I'd try to trick him into eating something like a carrot and I'd throw it to him so naturally he caught it in the air, but in a very fluid and slick movement he'd seamlessly spit it right out rolling it off his tongue and you could almost hear him say "NOPE!" He also wouldn't eat pancakes without syrup on them, and preferred them on a plate. He was fancy.
There are so many little things that I could probably go on and on. If you knew him please feel free to leave a little story you find amusing in the comments. He was a real character and I'd love to read about what other say about him.

A Dog, A Raft, And A Ball
On thing that was always nice about Simon was that even when he wasn't being played with, he found ways to entertain himself. For example when I'd have some sort of thing I was doing on the computer he would come up and hit me with his nose right under my wrist and flip in in the air as a subtle hint that he wanted to play. When that didn't work he'd find his ball and squeak it a few times then set it right on my desk in view where I couldn't miss it and STARE at it very intensely never moving never picking it back up unless it went too long then he'd pick it up chew it so it'd squeak and then put it right back where it was and continue to stare. It was almost like he thought if he started at it very intensely then I would have no choice but to notice it as well and then throw it for him.
Of course if that didn't work then as I said he'd find a way to entertain himself. Usually this consisted of taking his ball to the top of the steps laying down, giving it a few good chews and then dropping it so it'd fall down the stairs and he could chase after it. He'd repeat this over and over for hours, or until he wanted to go outside or perhaps someone would see him *sadly* playing alone and then throw the ball for him so he could get a proper run.
In the summer one of his one way fun games he's play was also with his ball, but he got a bit more creative. We had a swimming pool off the deck of our house, it was a round above ground and the way the filter was set up the water would come out and create a current that circulated around the pool. So, Simon would knock his ball into the water from the deck, let the water current carry the ball to the other side of the pool, where he would run around, jump on the Trampoline and fish the ball out of the pool.
This was all well and good until he dropped it in the pool and it either made it to the middle of the pool where the current wasn't pushing the water, or when the filter was turned off and suddenly the ball was trapped somewhere he couldn't get to. However being a clever dog he found a way to get his ball anyway. When met with the need for his ball and his inability to reach he he decided to simply jump in the pool to go get it back. However rather than just swimming out and back he decided to use a raft to paddle his way out to the ball and retrieve it.
He didn't go in the pool too often, but I have to say I was very impressed at this, and it's one of my fondest memories. For your viewing pleasure I present to you the photos of Simon using a raft to retrieve his ball.

In The Beginning: Finding Simon
Obviously Simon has been on my mind a lot so I thought I'd write a little about how Simon came to be with us. Simon was a dog rescued from the Humane Society. When we got him back in April of 1998 he was thought to be about a year old, but since he was a stray they weren't really sure, and it was just their best estimate. We've always just gone with that, and decided his birthday was in April of the previous year. We were coming up on our 16th anniversary with him, which means that he was coming up or possibly even already 17.
In the summer of 1997 we made a life altering move from Virginia to Michigan. I can't say that I was at all happy about this move. I was a junior in high school and having moved a bit I was certainly sick of it. I tried to stay with friends in Virginia, but due to circumstances it didn't really work out and I ended up back in Michigan home schooled for my Junior year as we stayed with my grandparents. Over the winter my mom found us a house and in February of 1998 we moved into the house.
I remember not wanting to be alone in the house, I remember wanting to get a dog now that we had a yard of our own and my mom finally had a decent job. So about a month after moving in we headed to the humane society to take a look at dogs. I don't know why, but going in I knew that I wanted a yellow lab, though we also though that a puppy was what we all wanted. It's a lot easier to know what's available not with the internet, but we had no idea if they would have puppies, what kind of dogs would be there, so it certainly wasn't a done deal.
I don't recall when the Humane Society got their big new renovation, but back then when you walked up you entered the building and along the side of the building was the outdoor pens that led to the in door pens so the animals could get some fresh air. Of course this also meant that the animals could see when people were coming in, and I seem to recall a lot of barking. Which is strange because it is much quieter now when you visit.
I distinctively remember seeing Simon way down the line of kennels as we walked up. Of course at the time I didn't know he was Simon, in fact his original name was "Ringo" which some Beatles fan who worked at the Humane Society surely decided on when he was found and brought in. Either way, I remember this white dog with a big stupid grin watch us as we were walking up to the building. I remember him disappearing back inside and running back and forth between the inside and the outside watching us almost expecting that as soon as we entered the building we'd be right there at his kennel. Whenever I think about getting him that's the thing I remember most. Watching him run inside then back out to watch us, and as we got closer to the door having to move to a different part of the kennel so he could watch us for as long as possible.
When we walked in we took a tour of the whole place. The original idea was still a puppy, and they had a few. I seem to remember some Golden Retriever puppies that we were thinking about, but wanted to see the whole place first. I don't remember Simon in his cage visiting him. I remember where he was located, but I don't remember actually finding him, or if I had to convince anyone that we should get him. I do remember going back to the puppies to find that they were all adopted while we were looking at other dogs. I remember picking Simon for a walk, and walking with him through the grounds of the humane society. I remember he pulled on the leash and practically walked on two legs because he was so excited. I remember he sniffed all around and had a great time. I remember that Amanda didn't like him because she thought he looked scary. I don't remember any of the decision making process or how we decided that Simon was the right one, but it happened, and we decided we wanted to adopt him.
I do remember being terribly disappointed that they were going to neuter him first, so we couldn't take
him home the day we got picked him out and had to wait a few days. Thinking about this, it must have been a warmer day, because I remember wearing my tan jacket when we went to pick him up, though I feel like it was kind of cloudy and may have just rained when we were walking him on the grounds. I do remember when we got to go pick him up. I was very excited and it was a bright sunny day. He was again super excited to be on the leash and walking him around a bit before getting him into the Contour and driving home. I sat in the front on the way home, and he sat on the floor right in front of me sitting up so he could try and see out the windows. For some reason we kind of took the back roads home, but I remember sitting with the sun coming through the windows and Simon with his big dog grin and his tongue hanging out the side of his mouth, just happy as a clam. When we finally got him all he wanted to do was play fetch, and we all took turns just throwing the ball and having him bring it back. Over and over again, literally for a couple of hours, each taking turns and trading out.
It was a wonderful day, and the last nearly 16 years have been an equal delight (even the hard days).

I Open At The Close
This is probably the most difficult post I've ever had to write, because it's taking me a lot to not only find the words to express how I feel, but to be able to get through the writing process due to my emotions. Today has been extremely rough, and I'm one that takes loss much harder than probably a lot of people around me, for whatever reason. It sticks with me, it slices me right down to the core. The finality of it, the foreknowledge of what is going to happen, the realization of what it all means, and the acknowledgement of what future will be took a toll on me today.
By know, as it's taken me quite some time to finally be able to write, many reading this know that tonight that Simon is no longer with us. Many had seen him recently and knew that he wasn't much longer for this world, and of course I knew it too. His health had been failing recently and over the past week or two took a severe turn for the worse. The last week in particular has been so emotionally taxing on me that it's been very hard to deal with. Knowing that I would have to make a decision is something that has been bothering me for some time. It seems easier for others, they tell me it's humane, it's for the best, and recite the same comments you'd expect to hear in this situation. Perhaps they are right. However the thought of making a decision to extinguish a life is not easy for me to deal with regardless of if it's the "right decision" or not. However, this internal debate only prolonged the inevitable, and tonight, it finally arrived.
I have a hard time of letting go. I think it's on account of my rather rootless life I've had. I don't have any friendships that date back beyond around high school. I don't have a childhood friend I've had since kindergarten. I don't have those stories about growing up with some close pal. I've always felt very unconnected because I was. Therefore the things I have I do not like giving up. I do not enjoy adding things to the enormous pile of loss that I have. I don't easily let connections walk through that door into a memory and a once upon a time that most things in my life end up. It's extremely painful for me to deal with these things, and it seems like it is constantly happening.
I lost a dear pet tonight, but also a member of my family. A companion that has been with me almost as long as my oldest friend I have today has. A presences that has been with me for the past 16 years that was dependable and predictable. Even though the past few months to a year have seen a progressive deterioration, Simon was still in there. There were surely bad days where he was tired, worn out, and it was clear he wouldn't be with me forever, but then the very next day that spark would return to his eyes, that goofy grin, and you could see that he was still in there.
At the same time, I've also lost a bridge to a different part of my life. Simon was a bridge to a past that has been gone for some time now. He was like a link to friends and family who are gone or have lost touch. He was something that helped bridged the gap that was created when we moved here. He felt almost like an anchor holding me to those people, that place, and that time in my life. Without him it's like the anchor has been lost and those things that had already drifted so far away now have nothing to tie to me and keep them near. There's no longer a bridge there, the connection is severed and that is really dragging on me right now.
Today has been full of loss, and there is so much happening in my feelings and with my thoughts. I will miss Simon, he was a wonderful companion, funny, and so much personality. Of all the animals that have found a home with us, he has been special. His absence will be impossible to fill.

I Need A Break
I realized today I haven't had any time off since July other than Labor Day and then the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Perhaps that is why I'm so cranky and feeling crappy lately. At least I'm being productive and getting things done, so that's nice I suppose. It's a very stressful period right now, and I don't feel good.

I woke up this morning, went downstairs for my morning workout, came back upstairs to get in the shower only to find that Ronan was standing in the shower. I don't know why he was doing this, and he's never done it before. But here he is, standing in the shower. He acted like he couldn't get out. He's been weird lately.

Sleep Deprived
Simon hasn't been doing well. Last week he somehow ate two socks and then passed them. By passed them I mean he had to have a little help fully removing them from his southern border. I'm sure he eventually would have worked it out, but the last thing I need is a dog walking around with a shit covered sock hanging out of his bum. Immediately following that he wasn't eating or drinking and I was gearing up for taking him in and the inevitable decision that would come with that. Though, he started eating again, and drinking, and perked back up.
Well, he's taken to barking a lot now. Not all the time, just bed time. He will lay around the house silent, but the second we go to bed it's incessant barking. If I ever get him to be quite he'll sleep for a few hours and then decide to bark. I've tried getting him water, which seemed to help. Then we got him a pillow to make him more comfortable but turned out to have the opposite reaction causing him to bark more. We got him food, which also seemed to help. We made sure he had done all his business. But nothing seems to help. I literally got about three hours of sleep last night. Only a few more the night before. I'm getting super cranky because I'm tired and can't figure out what to do to make him shut up. I'm about to just lay on the floor with him to see if that helps, but then he farts all night and that's not a pleasant thing to sleep next to.
Overall his health seems to be going downhill and I don't think he'll make it much longer. That is a hard thing to deal with.

I actually got a Christmas gift at work this year. This is a first. Well, no not entirely true. Our last Director got me a tin of cookies the year he was here. This year one of the project directors got me this fun card and a box of candy. Delicious!

Excel Fail
The greatest thing ever is when you screw up a formula in your household budget sheet and then plan things accordingly, set up payments, all that good stuff. The only problem is when you don't include all the cells so you spend more than you expected and suddenly have to re-plan everything because you were working on a false basis.
It's not a huge issue, because it didn't bounce the account or leave us with no money or anything, it just was annoying because I plan things pretty far out and every line somehow wasn't pulling the bottom cell into the calculations and therefore the whole thing needs to change because overtime that adds up.
So, that's what I spent a large portion of the day doing. Additionally, lots of other house work. At least everything is super clean now.

I didn't post this the other day, but I really liked it so I thought I would. It kind of covered the traditional events on Wednesday full with Hot Chocolate, a naked tree, and the newest additions to our decorations.

Action
I took some action this week and applied to WCC for a web design program they offer. I've been playing with the idea for some time now, and actually began the process back in 2011 when I first started at my current job because I wanted to do something else. Originally I thought surely something in teaching would eventually show up, but it's seeming like this is never going to happen. Add on to that the fact that my license is eventually going to expire it seems unlikely that I'll ever teach so I need something else to do that isn't what I'm doing now.
So, I'm registered for as many classes as I can at WCC. This semester it's only two that I can take due to their schedule as well as the sequence you have to take the classes in. Either way it's movement.

We got new stockings this year. Actually this may be the first actual stockings we've ever owned. We had two previously but they didn't match and were just kind of hung as decorations when we first moved into our apartment. Well this year we picked some up at Pottery Barn because they were doing free personalization and shipping, and had them on sale. I like how they turned out.

The Sound Of Ratings
Last night NBC decided it wanted to broadcast a live performance of The Sound of Music. In hopes of getting great ratings they decided to cast a non-Broadway actor and decided that Carrie Underwood would bring in large audiences that may not normally tune into something like this. Sounds like their decision will pay off in this area as it seems ratings were very good for this. However, I have to say I was not at all impressed by the show at all.
The first thing I'll address is the casting. It seems that no one is happy with Carrie Underwood's performance. Twitter and Facebook has been full of snark, and pretty much everywhere is giving her shit about it. I'm not going to necessarily do that. I will say that her performance wasn't great, but I will say she isn't trained for that sort of performance. She's not a Broadway singer, and she isn't an actress, so I can't really give her too much shit. She got on national television and did a LIVE performance. It wasn't easy and she did the best she could do (or at least I assume she gave it her all). So I have to say good for her for doing it.
However this gets to the larger issue, and that is the person who cast this show really screwed the pooch on it. Clearly they were after ratings and they got that, but surely there could have been other actors that could have brought viewers and been right for the part. It's not the actor at fault when they are miscast. You should never put an actor in a situation where they are in over their head, it's just not right to do to the show, or the actors. I don't think this just goes for Carrie Underwood. I wasn't very impressed with any of the acting, except perhaps for probably Laura Benanti as Schrader.
I think this goes into a secondary problem with the direction. I feel that surely they could have had some better results if they perhaps had a better director. The captain seemed like all he was doing was yelling all the time. There was no movement of his character, he was always pissy looking and at the same level. Maria... well, was flat and had some terrible delivery and surely could have been asked "try saying it a different way". Everything was just flat, and perhaps part of that is doing a show without an audience. This carries over into the choreography which was boring and looked more like something you'd see on a high school stage rather than on national television. Also, the ballroom scene was way over the top with the big movements and dancing. What was that.
I think the biggest issue I have is that NBC couldn't seem to get their technical issues under control. The sound levels were terrible. Quite often you couldn't hear the singers on account of the music. There was definitely background noise/hiss that surely with their technology they could have cleaned up. There were times that I saw someone hiding behind a piece of set, or where they really could have used a better stedicam. All these issues should be easily addressed when you have a huge company like this producing it.
In summation, I was very disappointed by this. About a third of the way through I considered just turning it off and popping in the DVD instead, but I felt I needed to watch the whole thing and give it a chance. I like that we get some Broadway on television, but I wish they had done a better job with it. If this is your ambassador to those who don't usually see a Broadway show then you're totally missing out. I've seen this work, for example we saw Daniel Radcliffe in How to Succeed In Business Without Really Trying and he was amazing. They didn't skimp on the choreography he worked his tail off, and it worked great and he was doing 8 shows a week for months. So surely they could have done better with a one time performance with a big name. It was underwhelming and sad.

So, I've had this issue of Time on my desk for months because I don't read on my break anymore. I just don't feel like doing it. I really am behind, I think this issue is from much earlier in the year. Which means all the ones since it are sitting around my house. On the other hand, I did read some of the Book Thief last week, so that's happening at least.

I really don't understand businesses that can't seem to understand what the Internet is and how it should be used. For example, if you have a certain service that has certain hours, you should list it on your website. You should also let people know when they call asking about that service. That way people don't drive over an hour to get to you to find out that they stop accepting new orders at 6:30 and it's not 7:15.
Tonight we drove up to Bronners for a required ornament for the tree, to find that they stop taking customized orders at 6:30. This information isn't on the website. The website also doesn't allow you to order for pick up. We called to ask about it, and what happened, they said we can't call ahead and would have to order in person or online for shipping. Well shipping is an absurd length of time for something that's an hour away. So we opted to come in only to find that we wasted our time and our gas. I'm not pleased with them at all.
Also, they have a shitty website that is way too busy and makes me annoyed and overwhelmed by the business of it. It's also

Snapped this picture as we were going in. At the time I was like, "Well this will be a fun experience, especially since this is Jasmine's first visit. A few minutes later I was really annoyed and hangry.

Tradition!
Today was Christmas tree day! I love Christmas tree day, it's a lot of fun, and this year I think we may have had our best luck yet! We went to Coleman's as usual to pick up our tree and wandered around a bit looking at them. We usually go with the Fraser Fir, but the Noble Firs were looking pretty good for a minute or two. We found a few that might work, but they seemed a bit small. I prefer taller trees, small trees are super lame. There was one that was a descent height but it was kind of skinny but shaped in the proper tree like fashion.
So we did a once through then looked around the back just for kicks past the Scotch Pines, and they had another bunch of Frasers back there! Well we found one leaned up against the building that looked like it might be the one, but it seemed like it may have been a bit too tall. So we did another sweep of the whole place before coming back to the hidden one in the back and Becky and Jasmine both thought it was the best so we went with it. They were totally right! So the guy cut the end off the bottom, drilled the hole in the trunk for the tree stand we have, and put it up on the roof of our car for us. We also picked up a wreath but I forgot to take a picture, so I guess it's for tomorrow's picture of the day.
Once we got it home we began our annual tradition of putting up the tree. We don't really have many traditions, but every year we do the same thing which is put the tree up, make some hot chocolate, and pop in Muppets Christmas Carol. It usually takes a bit of rearranging, pulling stuff out of the basement, and getting everything set to decorate, so by the time we're done with the lights and ribbon the Muppets have just about finished. After that we change out and watch Love Actually while we finish off the tree. We figure that way when we're done we can sit and watch the rest of the movie, which we all love!
This year we were able to get some new stockings and decorations for the house, which has made it a lot more festive than in past years. So, it was a lovely traditional Christmas tree day, and it makes me want to have holiday parties!

Today we got our Christmas tree. I think I like it a lot more than our tree last year, it's very full and nicely shaped. I think this may even be the best tree we have had so far. It was hiding back around the back of the tree place, and looked a little tall but Becky and Jasmine both said it was great. They were right.
Picture 275
The fully decorated tree. I had to kind of crouch down to get a good view of the whole thing, so it looks a little funny in this. But you can also see our new tree skirt! We had the last one since we moved into our apartment in 2001, and figured it was time for a new one since the cats ate all the beads off the edge of it.
Picture 276
We also got some new stockings, since we only had two and they didn't match, also from when we moved into our first apartment in 2001. These have our names embroidered right on, they were on super sale before Thanksgiving. We also picked up stocking holders instead of trying to use nails or tacks.

And here we have the "final" product. We are actually going to pick up some garlands to put on the mantle and maybe a few other minor decorations to get the place into a slightly more festive state. I love how it all turned out!
